I am a South African

When I say I'm proudly South African
I mean it.
The love, the determination, the change from can't to can.
I've seen it.

When I stand upon the beautiful hills
And I shout, "Educate my people".
I stand and observe the goods and the ills,
I stand and look down upon evil.

Where else would one find the beauty?
A land blessed, a land so picturesque
Where else would you find this diversity?
Different races, cultures, backgrounds. Everything! The church and the mosque.

I'd like to invite you to join me
We can meet at Hendrik Verwoerd Drive or Bantu Biko Street
I could show the bad or have you overwhelmed by good. Whatever! Lots to see.
I invite you. Just choose a place to meet.

I'd like to have a meal with you
We can have briaani or a braai. Let's meet.
We could have imifuno or potjie or even a stew.
Let's have a meal. Just choose anything you want to eat.

I'd like to show you the wonders
Let's go to Table Mountain or The Hole in the Wall.
Let's enjoy the splendour of the Drakensberg or the serenity of Kruger Park -
Let's travel during the day or under the stars in the dark.

Smile my beloved country.
Let me take you to the first heart transplant.
Let me show you the redeeming 27 years
Please let me make you smile. Wipe your tears
Let me take you to 1994. Freedom.
Let's look at democracy served. The Treatment Action Campaign
See how democracy redeemed us. See how it took away the pain.

Let me put cream on your cracked cheeks. The tears have dried.
Let me show you the prosperous future.
Let's not look back, the 67 at Sharpville died.
They died for a worthless reason but a worthy cause. Take a few steps further.

Mzantsi, I love you!
I am a proud South African.

When you have dream build on it in positive light and what you land up with is a star... Thank you for confirming my feeling for South Africa :)

Hi Siyadume
Well done. I love your poem.
It captures the idea of another good author, Vic Guhrns, who says Africa gets into your blood like Malaria. That has certainly been my sentiment very recently. Africa, and particularly South Africa, gets into my blood.
You have highlighted the diversities so well and shown how we deal with them more elegantly than anyone else in the world. Keep up the good work
